Learn to make

Films with intention.

A practice for aspiring filmmakers who care about the image.

About

The Filmmaking Journey is a practice space for image-makers who want to develop a genuine cinematic voice — not just technical competence. Most filmmaking education teaches you to replicate. This is about learning to see. To develop a relationship with light, movement, and time that is entirely your own with influences from art, culture & counter-culture.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

For filmmakers at any stage who take the work seriously.

Whether you're making your first short or trying to find a more intentional path through professional work — this practice is for people who believe that how a film feels matters as much as what it shows.

WORKSHOP RUN BY JONAS KOLECKI

Jonas Kolecki is a filmmaker, painter, and collagist whose multidisciplinary practice centers on time as both a tool and a subject. His work explores themes of ephemerality, decay, and the human impact on landscapes—physical and conceptual alike. Through site-specific and context-sensitive approaches, he creates projects across painting, film, performance, and collaboration that investigate the traces and transformations left by human presence. ROADMAP

From beginner to professional filmmaker.

Most people learn what to film. This is about learning how to see — light, composition, duration, the vocabulary that exists before the camera turns on. From there, the work becomes about finding what only you notice, and making films that couldn't have been made by anyone else. Real projects, real feedback, a body of work you can stand behind. And finally, how to sustain it — working with clients and institutions without disappearing into their brief.

The Filmmaking Journey is my favorite creative community — it’s the most genuine expression of pure love for filmmaking I’ve ever seen.

I recently had a one-on-one session with @Jonas Marcel . The goal was simple: figure out what my creative interests really are as a filmmaker. Jonas guided me through the process with a lot of attention to detail, asking the right questions and helping me see patterns I hadn’t noticed before. At one point, I even called three of my friends to ask what topics I always talk about, their answers (filmmaking, politics, and technology) revealed a lot about what drives me. By the end of the session, I realized I’m drawn to morally complex heroes, technology as a tool for justice, and stories about freedom and rebellion. It gave me clarity on the kind of filmmaker I want to become and inspired ideas for future projects. Big thanks to @Jonas Marcel for the session, it was a really enjoyable and eye‑opening experience.

I have learned many things by Jonas Marcel Thank you so much for giving me your time and guidance. I’ve learned the exact steps to achieve my one-year goal. As a video editor, I was stuck and struggling to find clients, but you reminded me that success may not come today or tomorrow yet it will come. You also gave me a clear, step-by-step plan to build a free website, do effective outreach, and scale. I’m grateful and excited to put this into action. Abhishek Jiskar

Jonas has been a great coach, has given me so much value, a road map for success that I can literally copy paste into my business, and I have already seen the success, landing my first monthly retainer client after a couple weeks of working with him. Anybody that is actually serious about making a career with videos, needs to grab the 1on1 coaching. Madison Pagie

I took part in today's workshop with @Jonas Marcel where he went through the process of finding inspiration and brainstorming ideas and then using storyboards to put a structure to the idea and help plan the shoot day. He is very knowledgeable and used a project of his own to get behind the scenes and show how storyboards are used in real life. He was akso very willing to answer questions and offer support on a number of different topics around filmmaking. 🙏

🎬 Had an inspiring call with @Jonas Marcel last night. A lot of valuable insight for upcoming filmmakers — and a reminder that great stories matter more than expensive gear. Key lessons: 📱 You can plan and shoot films with just a smartphone ✂️ Free editing tools like CapCut are more than enough to start 🎥 Rent gear instead of buying everything upfront 🎞️ Film festivals are powerful places to learn and connect 🚀 Most importantly: create, post your work, and keep building momentum Big thanks to Jonas for the knowledge and encouragement. 🙌 — Atlehang Motshabi

"I’m so grateful to Jonas! After months of no results doing it alone, his strategy helped me book multiple clients in just three weeks — my schedule is now full. Lifesaver!"
